Overview Contents

A person who feels mastery over his/her environment transforms the `bad' stress into good excitement, working on time management as a skill, helps a person feel that mastery. The goal is not to feel in control because that is an illusion. The goal of time management is feeling that you can master anything that comes at you.

Time Management for Maintenance Professionals - What you will learn

Fact: As a busy maintenance professional very little of your time is really yours. Most of it is programmed by your boss, your subordinates or the business system you operate in. It is essential for you to manage the little time that is left!

Maintenance leadership is under tremendous pressure to improve performance every year. This pressure puts heavy demands against the manager, supervisor or engineer’s time. Successful leaders from all disciplines have to successfully manage their time so that they can thrive and produce beyond expectations. The problem is that without time management their home life will suffer. The best managers balance their demands and have a home life in addition to a job.

This audio course gives specific recommendations to improve your productivity and what to do with the time freed up as a result of the increase in productivity.

This training includes a workbook in PDF format included on the disk. The audio training is divided into several sections:

Mapping your current practices: How good are your current time management practices? Program includes exercises to help you see how your time is spent. All journeys have a starting point and a destination. This is the starting point.

Ideas and tips to improve your time management: Surprisingly, saving time is not difficult. It depends on having a minimal amount of discipline and a system to remember what to do until the technique becomes automatic. This section has 20 ideas or tips to improve time management.

Two specific projects to improve your time management: The projects include cleaning up your workspace and how to get more things done. The cleaning your workspace is based of actual studies of how people in disrupted workspaces tend to interrupt themselves and lose productivity. In the project to help you get more things done you are directed to look for waste and forced downtime (such as waiting for a meeting that starts late) and how to prepare yourself for that.

Project to help you choose what to do with time that is freed up: Success depends on concentrating your limited energy and effort into high return on investment activities. These activities are ‘worth’ a great deal more then routine low return on investment activities. It is essential (for maximum success) to distinguish between the two types of activity.

Project to help you decide when to take on certain activities: Finally everyone has natural rhythms in focus and alertness. In this project you will plot the rhythms to identify the times of the day to undertake high return on investment activities. There are also ideal times to do paperwork, answer low priority E-mail. Both up and down rhythms are important.

You will learn:
  • How good are your current time management practices (a test in the booklet)
  • How to improve your personal efficiency and make better use of your time (20 ideas)
  • How to separate the wheat from the chaff and select the high return on investment activities
  • How to make your work space more productive
  • How to increase your output by downing two things at once (you won’t believe how easy it is once you catch on to the trick)
  • How to pick activities and what time of the day to do them.
